Book Review: Daasi Dholan Yaar Di by Faiza Iftekhar

Non review Rant

I am on a reading spree. I read two books two weeks ago. I finished 6 this week. I know, it amazes me, too.

I will start by reviewing the one I read two weeks back, and is long overdue for a review.

One I’ve reviewed already. Now coming to the first one. Yes, this I read first. But didn’t get enough time to review it. It is difficult to review a book that’s a complete package.

Review

According to my definition, a complete package book is one that keeps you engaged and mystified and has all the elements – romance, mystery, tragedy, twists, and humor. This is one such book.

Written by Faiza Iftekhar, it is sort of given that the story will be awesome. She’s one of the finest Urdu fiction writers we have today.

The story is about a head strong girl Gul (Gulabo), and some bold steps that she takes, to be happy. As the story progresses, your sympathies keep shifting from Gul, to Halima, to Yasir, to Narmeen, and even the three dadis. Much like our lives, there is at least one aspect of each character that the others just don’t understand.

My favourite character is Tipu. I love how he didn’t bother about anything except what he was sure he really wanted.

This story has made me laugh like crazy and then weep uncontrollably. Isn’t that mark of a great writer?

Verdict

Five on five for this one.

What do you think of this book?

Edited: There is a drama Ranjha Ranjha Kardi airing on Hum TV starring Iqra Aziz, Imran Ashraf and a handpicked-cast. I have decided to not watch the drama as the story was troubling enough. By all means, if you like watching dramas better than reading book, go ahead and watch it. Do share your review of the same. Thanks for reading.
