Akbari Asghari | Episode 1

Introduction

Akbari Asghari is a 2011 Pakistani comedy drama television series based on Nazir Ahmad Dehlvi’s Mirat-ul-Uroos. Fun fact: It is also referenced in the second episode, subtle tribute to the story that was the inspiration.

Akbari Asghari is a contemporary and humourous adaptation of the novella by Faiza Iftikhar. I think she also did an adaptation of Cinderella. Let it suffice to say that Faiza likes retelling the classics. Cinderella was awful, but this one stands out.

Sanam Baloch and Humaima Malik play the titular characters, Akbari and Asghari respectively, while Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas play the male leads.

Akbari Asghari Episode 1 Written Update and Review

We learn that Beyji is in a nikaah, that she doesn’t like her older bhabhi Shaheen, that Dadaji likes good food, Akbar is religious while Asghar is a womanizer. He has an affair with every girl in his reach.
Batool and her daughter

Hatam and Kulsoom aka Kim live their lives through a million lies. Kim lies about her work, her background, her social status

Akbari aka Becky is the goody two-shoes. She pretends the be the happy, content, and “good girl”.

Asghari aka Sarah is brutally honest and doesn’t like mincing her words.

If you’re wondering about the four chomus who were in the SUV in the beginning of the episode, don’t. They were only there to introduce us to KFC-Kareem Fazal Chaudhary. And that’s all. That question remained unanswered when I watched the series the first time several years ago. Yesterday, when I showed the episode to mum an sis, my sis asked me: what happened to those four people. The answer is simple: nothing.

Overall, this episode was a nice introduction of the series. Shaheen was a bit louder than my liking, but I guess given Fawad’s deglamourized avatar, I can live with some loud characters.
