Alif Ending Explained

What’s the Fuss is about?

The Umera Ahmed novel ended in September (read complete novel review).

Then, began the drama (read Alif Cast & Characters).

And, yesterday, one of the most phenomenal dramas came to and end (read Alif Finale Episode Review).

Ever since the novel ended, we have been wondering if the drama will show a different end, that is, whether Momin and Momina end up together.

Even when the drama was being aired, people were curious to know about their fate.

They did not. Now, people are asking “Explain Alif’s ending.” The reason is simple – we want a happily ever after.Alif Ending ExplainedSo, here’s the deal folks. We may not like how it ended but that’s the writer’s vision. She wanted to leave us (through the lead pair) with a ache, a belonging, a desire for more.

There may be several creative decisions taken for screen adaptation and the drama did have many additional scenes, but the end remains exactly the same as that of the novel.

Qalb-e-Momin asks Momina to come along with him to Turkey and she refuses, quoting Rumi.

Remember, the same quote is also used in Rockstar (Bollywood movie), one of the iconic lines from the movie.

پتہ ہے۔۔۔

یہاں سے بہت دور۔۔۔

غلط اور صحیح کے پار۔۔۔

ایک میدان ہے۔۔۔

میں وہاں ملوں گا تمہیں۔۔۔

Pata hai…

Yahan se bahut door…

Ghalat aur sahi ke paar…

ek maidan hai…

main tujhe wahan milunga

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there

I cannot say I understand Rumi’s words but here is my interpretation.

This world we live in, tries to pigeonhole things as right and wrong. Love is beyond those categorization. I, therefore, will meet you in the life beyond, where these borders cease to exist.

Qalb-e-Momin wants to carry the legacy that his grandfather Abdul Alaa has left for him – run a calligraphy school in Turkey.

Momina Sultan wants to carry the legacy that master Ibrahim and Husn-e-Jahan aka Husna have left – continue repairing the Qur’an nuskhas in master Ibrahim’s old home, Karachi.

For them to pursue their dreams, they will have to give up on their lesser dreams, their love for each other.

They will not be together, not physically, not at the moment.

However, the fact that Qalb-e-Momin gives her the keys to his house the accepts, is a tiny hint that in future, if and when she feels that she has achieved what she had set out to, she may return to him.

It is for is, the reader and the viewer to weave an end we’d like.

I hope that helps.

Stay connected.
