Coke Studio Season 11 | Episode 2 | Runaway | Yousaf Sisters

Disclaimer: This review is an opinion of a music listener. I have no musical background or technical expertise. If anybody disagrees with anything in this post… well, they will have to live with it. I can’t help them 🙂

Runaway

Runaway is sung by Yousaf sisters, along with Riaz Qadri and Ghulam Ali Qadri! Since season 11 truly brings some new talent, this is the first time I listened to all four performers. And I hate to say that I was not impressed. First problem is the combination of English song with qawwali style. Just didn’t cut it. The sisters have remarkably similar voice. And their hand gestures seemed quite out of sync.

Rating: 2/5 stars.

Gaddiye

This song is a collaboration between Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi and Asrar. I don’t understand the lyrics much. I don’t even know if it is punjabi, saraiki, sindhi, balochi… definitely not urdu. Pakistani, too, has a rich culture and dialects.

Khan saab did his charm. It reminded me of Season 10 – Sab Maya Hai. This song failed to leave similar impact.

Rating: 3/5 stars.

Rasha Mama

this was a folksy song, performed by Zarsanga (another new name on CS#11), Gul Panrra and Khumariyaan.

I don’t understand this. The song, the music, the lyrics everything just bounced off my head.

Rating: 1.5/5 stars.

Ghoom Charakhra

The legendary Abida Parveen and a power-packed performer Ali Azmat come together for this Sufi song. The lyrics is amazing, the music is good and the overall effect is quite awesome. The constant chanting of “Haq Allah Allah” made me emotional and gave me goosebumps. It would be unfair to say that one performed any better than the other. I particularly liked how Ali Azmat used various variations of his voice. That was amazing. Wait, that IS amazing.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars.

My favourite from both eposides is now Ghoom Charakhra – the shikwa part to be specific.
