Episode 8: Coke Studio Season 11 (Jashan)

Disclaimer: This review is an opinion of a music listener. I have no musical background or technical expertise. If anybody disagrees with anything in this post… well, they will have to live with it. I can’t help them 🙂

Luddi Hai Jamalo, Ali Sethi & Humaira Arshad

Ali Sethi is finally here. I love all of his performances in Coke Studio so far. And who can forget Humaira Arshad’s performance in “Katey na Katey”? I can’t.

They sing “Luddi Hai Jamalo”, originally sung by the legendary Madam Noor Jahan.

This is a fun song and beautifully re-done.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars.

Apna Gham, Bilal Khan & Mishal Khawaja

Bilal has been on Coke Studio before, but I haven’t heard him anywhere except his vlog on YouTube. Mishal debuted on Coke Studio.

Both singers have a nice voice. I didn’t like the melody much. I just didn’t connect with it. Also, the repetition of ‘Apna Gham’ was done far too many times for my liking. On a side note, they were singing about ‘Apna Gham’, but they looked like they are happy. I guess what I am trying to say is, I felt a disconnect between the song and the singers’ expressions.

Rating: 3/5 stars.

Wah Jo Kalaam, Asrar, Shamu Bai & Vishnu

This is called as folk-rock, whatever that means. I get the folk feeling. I don’t understand what rock is.

All three of them – Asrar, Shamu and Vishnu have very distinct voices. They sound good individually. They sound good in chorus, too.

This song was good. The melody, the composition, the voices, the lyrics; it touched a nerve somewhere. The song also had a calming effect on me.

Rating: 3.5/5 stars.

Other observations:

  • Luddi Hai Jamalo & Wah Jo Kalaam both were good.
  • Humaira Arshad is awesome.
  • Ali Sethi is unmatchable.
  • From season 11, my favourites or the songs that I replay over and over again; are incidentally both Momina’s – Roye Roye and Mahi Aa Ja.

Thanks for reading.
