Zanjeerain Episode 9 Written Update and Review
Assalamualaikum!
I did not know if I would be watching the episode and doing a review today but since I cannot sleep; the Bakras are making a lot of noise (let’s face it when do I ever fall asleep before Fajr), I thought I will wash the episode and first it today I am not getting time tomorrow, for sure.
Mudassir and Rabiya
This newly wet couple is spending time to get tonight other day to grocery shopping Rabiya shows off what an expert she is in household chores and that she makes everything from scratch, and then she’s making shaljam ka achar for Mudassir.
Two things that I noticed and kinda liked: how Sajal said adrak lassan proper gharelu style Over here, majority of people say “lassoon” which sounds too indian or “lehsun” which sounds too proper because of how it is spelled in Urdu. Lassan is like ghar ki baat, i.e. for the past three days mum has been talking about “eid ke liye adrak lassan tayyar karna hai”. The second thing I like is how Mudassir offers to help. I am still not used to see men offering help in household chores. They are like: paisa laya na. Ab baqi kaam aurton ka hai.
I digress.
Zafran’s Plan (No Surprises)
He has cunningly planned what we all anticipated, at least I did. And he sweet talks Gul Mehr into promising “I would anything to save you and Torsam Khan”.
Just look at her face.
And then Zafran Khan says this: main tujhe Sar Buland Khan ke nikaah mein dena chahta hoon.
I forgot about Hindi subtitle. Being Indian, I don’t get Urdu subtitles. Sometimes such screengrabs help me keep my thoughts sorted when I sit down for posting episode recaps.
The Jirga
The Jirga opens with a Quran recitation of verses that are apt for the occasion. It gave me an insight into tribal culture (which I’m fascinated with, if I’m being honest).
Zafran Khan first apologizes for what Torsam did (Sherdil’s murder) and presents his offer of swara. Gul Mehr to be married to Sar Buland Khan.
Sar Buland Khan and Sohrab not only refuse this proposal but also admonish Zafran Khan for being such a coward.
Sar Buland Khan even calls the tradition of swara (of forcing girls to be married in compensation of a murder, not sure if I heard it right) non-islamic and unjust.
I had predicted this move from Zafran Khan but I had not anticipated that Sar Buland Khan would reject the proposal. There’s still room for my second theory: Rabiya and Sar Buland sitting in a tree…
A new side of Noor
Noor bhabhi notices that Shirin is eavesdropping on their conversation and calls her out on this. Sher Bano doesn’t like this; she naively thinks Shirin is a well-wisher of the family. I like Noor. She hasn’t gotten much to do in the plot until now but I’m pleasantly surprised to see that “hum bhi khopri mein dimagh rakhte hain, kaash puchho ki mudda’a kya hai”
Swara Rejected, Now What?
Okay, so Zafran Khan offered Gul Mehr in Sar Buland Khan’s nikaah, he refused. When this was happening, Torsam learns what Zafran Khan has done, he ain’t happy.
Also ,when this was happening, Gul Mehr was praying to Allah for mercy. I guess we can say that her prayers have been answered. Zafran Khan, however, ends the episode with: Swara mein thukrayi huyi ladki se kaun shadi karega.
Second of all: Arey? Tera Torsam hai na?
And first of all, how many such lame-ass traditions do they folks have? There was Sang-e-Maah where once a ghag is done at a girl’s house, nobody else can bring their proposal for that girl. And now this. I’m beginning to think why some people find these traditions problematic but it doesn’t diminish my fascination with the qabayili log. I should probably write about it some time.
Alright, enough for today. Salam.
