Review
1. Illustrations That Steal the Show
The illustrations in Abe Lincoln and the Muddy Pig are absolutely delightful and really bring the story to life. My niece was immediately captivated by the bright colors, expressive faces, and small details scattered throughout. The artwork provides so much to look at and talk about on each page, which kept her interested even when the concept of “Abe Lincoln” was a bit beyond her grasp.
2. A Story with Universal Values
While the story is set in a historical context, the message of compassion, making choices, and doing the right thing is universal. Kids can understand the situation of helping someone in need—even if it’s a messy job! Abe’s dilemma shows children the importance of lending a hand, which is a fantastic lesson for kids, no matter where they are from.
3. Introducing a Historic Figure
Explaining who Abraham Lincoln was to a young child was admittedly a bit tricky, as this book assumes some familiarity with the figure. I could see it resonating more with kids in the U.S., who may have a bit of background on Lincoln. Still, it sparked curiosity in my niece about who he was, and we ended up talking about his role as a president who cared for his people. So even if it was challenging, it served as a great conversation starter!
4. The Sweet Spot for Storytelling
The book manages to keep things simple yet meaningful. It’s a great length for a bedtime story or a quick read during the day, with just enough humor and excitement to keep kids engaged. For adults, it’s a reminder that historical figures had real lives and values from an early age—something worth sharing with the next generation.
In short, Abe Lincoln and the Muddy Pig is an adorable book that successfully combines history with a timeless lesson. It’s a fantastic pick if you’re looking for a fun, values-based story, and you don’t mind filling in a bit of background for the little ones!
