Review

Oh, what an adventure this one was!

  • Greg tries (and fails) to impress his crush, Holly Hills.
  • He tries time capsule thing, and another idea to save himself from the bullies.
  • Greg’s attempt at building a “money making empire” and how miserably he fails.
  • His dad tries to toughen him up by making him play outdoor sports — including signing him up for soccer. And Greg tries his best to get out of it. It DOES help that he sucks at the game.
  • Greg wears embarrassing clothes to church, thanks to Manny.
  • His dad threatens to send him to military school (Spag Union) to make him more responsible.
  • He signs up for the Boy Scouts camping trip, thanks to his Dad, which turns into a total mess, FOR HIS DAD.
  • Greg accidentally humiliates himself in front of Holly, several times.

All these episodes pile up into hilarious chaos — classic Greg!

Lines that made me chuckle

On digging a hole to avoid the bullies:

We’re going to be in college before this hole is ten feet deep.

On new year’s resolutions:

I’m pretty much perfect.

About Rowley on getting a card on valentine day:

sometimes I just don’t know about that boy.

On not being a quitter:

Final Thoughts

“The Last Straw” is Greg Heffley at his whiniest — and somehow, that’s exactly why we can’t stop reading. Jeff Kinney serves up middle-school drama, dad jokes, and awkward life lessons in his trademark doodle-packed style.

While I think Greg is a narcissist most of the time and is hilarious at times, I feel sorry for him especially about the perils of being a middle child and how he’s often shortchanged with Manny and Rodrick.

By the end, you’ll be rooting for Greg… even if you’re not sure he deserves it. Another hilarious (and painfully relatable) entry in the Wimpy Kid saga!
