Miss Wild Mr Mild: Shudhh Desi Romance by S. M. Bikanu

Non-review Rant

I know this isn’t a short story — which is what we’ve been reading almost exclusively so far in 2026 — but this title stood out for me.

Bani comes to Punjab for a vacation and ends up getting married. It’s very filmy and immediately gave me Namaste London vibes-Pubjab, fields, trees, walks in the pind, even some pubjabi lines. Unhappy with how things unfold, she challenges her husband, Harry, setting the tone for what follows.

What really impressed me was how smart, contemporary, and thoughtfully subverted this was as an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well. Bani’s challenge to Harry closely mirrors Bertram’s challenge to Helena, but with a distinctly desi twist that felt both clever and fresh. The parallels were intentional without being heavy-handed.

I also loved the attention to detail — even the initials of the main characters matched, which says a lot about how much thought went into the adaptation. It genuinely felt like the author had engaged deeply with the source material rather than loosely borrowing the idea.

The only issue I noticed was a small inconsistency: Bani’s father’s name appears as Nikhil in some places and Rajdeep in others. It’s minor, but noticeable.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one. It was fun, sharp, and surprisingly layered.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5/5)

Notes

“If you need a man with a neat biography,” he said, voice low, “I’m not him.” Her breath caught. He leaned in a fraction, elbows on the table. “And if you need someone predictable,” he added, “I’m definitely not him.”

Domesticity looked strangely natural on him.

The Final Verdict

Loved it — especially if you enjoy filmy desi romances with literary roots and clever adaptations.
