Shirin Farhad Episode 1 Written Update and Review
The Obsession with Film Crew
The series opens with two a grotesque scene about partition-passengers from a train getting down, and being slashed with swords. And then the director calls cut.
Thank goodness it was just a movie shoot. I’ve watched Pinjar back when I was in college, and that’s all I can stomach about partition.
Then, we see two lukhhas watching the film people with awe and admiration. Meet Farhad and Ali of Bahawal Pur.

Farhad runs a stall at the railway station, where the film crew has set camp. He is so smitten that he befriends everyone, knows their name, and offers to help every possible way. He even brings tiffin for the tailor Master Saifuddin Sahab. Saifuddin seems to like Farhad as well, and asks him to visit Lahore.
The station master lets the train depart, late, much to the director’s dismay. They still hadn’t captured the scene they wanted. Sultan, Golden bhai start to throw tantrums and drop hints that station master Imdad Hussain is in trouble. Imdad Hussain has had enough.
Imdaad Hussain: The ijaazat naama was valid till a certain time, now it’s invalid. You can shoot here once you get the renewed approval letter.
I paraphrase, of course.
With a bitter taste in their mouths, the crew leaves for Lahore.
Farhad’s Ambition
Farhad is disheartened to find what his own father has done. He has made up his mind to work in the film industry, behind the camera, of course.
Ali, Farhad’s best friend tries to knock some sense into Farhad’s head. Their conversation is profound and hilarious at the same time.
Farhad to Ali: Hakim sahab ne chawal marne se parhez kaha hai
Back home, Shamsa also tries to convince Farhad to let go of this dream.
Farhad is so obsessed with his new ambition of working in the showbiz industry that he doesn’t even want to hear anything against it, not even from his loving sister Shamsa.
The next morning, unassuming Shamsa brings breakfast for her brother, and finds a letter.
Yep, a bye-bye letter. She brings it to her father, hoping he’d do something to find Farhad, get him back. The look of total loss is so evident on this poor father’s face.
Review
Tanveer Syed has done a fabulous job as a strict usool-pasand father. For that matter, everyone has performed well. And there are a lot of people, a LOT.
Kanwal Khan looks so good in this one. I’ve always liked her, but in this simple girl from Bahawalpur, she looks perfect.
