Surat al-Jumu’ah is the 62nd chapter of the Quran and is named after the day of Friday, also known as Jumu’ah in Arabic. It is one of the most important chapters of the Quran and is recited by Muslims all around the world during their weekly congregational prayers on Fridays. Surat al-Jumu’ah is a beautiful and powerful reminder of the importance of community, unity, and the blessings of worshipping Allah (SWT) together.
The first verse of Surat al-Jumu’ah reads, “Whatever is in the heavens and on earth glorifies Allah, the King, the Holy, the Almighty, the Wise.” This verse sets the tone for the rest of the chapter, reminding us that all of creation glorifies Allah (SWT), and we should do the same. It is a call to remember our purpose in life and to recognize the majesty and sovereignty of Allah (SWT).
One of the key themes of Surat al-Jumu’ah is the importance of coming together as a community to worship Allah (SWT). In verse 2, Allah (SWT) says, “It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they were before in clear error.” This verse reminds us of the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and coming together as a community to learn from the Quran and the Sunnah.
Verse 9 of Surat al-Jumu’ah states, “O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.” This verse highlights the importance of attending the Friday congregational prayer and leaving worldly pursuits behind to focus on the remembrance of Allah (SWT). It is a reminder that our ultimate goal in life should be to please Allah (SWT), and that attending the Friday prayer is an essential part of our worship and spiritual growth.
Another important theme of Surat al-Jumu’ah is the concept of unity and brotherhood among Muslims. In verse 10, Allah (SWT) says, “And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.” This verse encourages Muslims to disperse after the Friday prayer and to seek the blessings and provisions of Allah (SWT) in the world. It also emphasizes the importance of maintaining unity and brotherhood among Muslims, even after leaving the mosque.
Surat al-Jumu’ah also reminds us of the blessings of worshipping Allah (SWT) together as a community. In verse 11, Allah (SWT) says, “And when they see a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rush to it and leave you standing. Say, ‘What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers.'” This verse is a reminder that the true blessings of life come from worshipping Allah (SWT) and seeking His pleasure, not from worldly pursuits or distractions.
Overall, Surat al-Jumu’ah is a beautiful and powerful reminder of the importance of community, unity, and the blessings of worshipping Allah (SWT) together. It reminds us of our purpose in life, the majesty and sovereignty of Allah (SWT), and the importance of following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in coming together as a community to learn from the Quran and the Sunnah.
May Allah give us all the taufeeq to recite this Surah every Friday. Ameen.
