Marital Rape in Dramas

Alright, so I finally have the time to sit own and pen my thoughts about this taboo topic.

The hint of marital rape in Tere Bin.

I generally take dramas at face value, watch it for mindless entertainment that I know is forbidden in Islam. Occasionally, though, something strikes hard, so hard that I can’t stop thinking about it for days.

Such as Tere Bin.

Here I am, with my sincere efforts at unveiling the evils of depicting marital rape in dramas and a call for responsible storytelling.

Introduction

In recent times, the portrayal of sensitive and controversial topics in media has sparked significant debates and discussions, extramarital affairs, behen chasing her behnoi and vice versa (Ishqiya), sasur lusting after his bahu (Pyar Ke Sadqay) and whatnot . One such issue that has gained attention is the inclusion of marital rape in television drama Tere Bin. Things escalated quicker because it was one of the most trending dramas, one that has garnered attraction from viewers all over the world.

Episode 46 ended on a note that Murtasim angrily shuts the door vowing to show his “auqat”. The promos for episode 47 showed us Meerub weeping with smudged makeup. It doesn’t take much to understand what had happened.

It caused a fervour on social media. The makers were forced to change the narrative at the last minute. Despite the fact that the makers showed it a “mutually consentual passionate togetherness“, it didn’t sit well with most of the viewers. But I am not here to discuss that.

The depiction of this heinous act within the confines of marriage raises concerns about the potential normalization of such violence and the impact it can have on society. In this blog post, I am trying to delve into the dark side of showcasing marital rape in dramas and advocate for responsible storytelling that promotes awareness, empathy, and positive change.

1. Understanding Marital Rape

Marital rape refers to any non-consensual sexual activity imposed by one spouse on the other within the bounds of marriage. It is an abhorrent violation of an individual’s autonomy, dignity, and basic human rights. Recognizing the gravity of this issue is essential in addressing the harmful effects it can have on the victims and the broader society.

2. Media’s Role in Shaping Perceptions

Television dramas hold immense influence over viewers, as they often reflect societal norms and values. When the portrayal of marital rape is mishandled, there is a risk of perpetuating harmful beliefs and stereotypes, such as victim-blaming or justifying abusive behavior. Media has a responsibility to handle sensitive subjects with care, sensitivity, and an understanding of the potential consequences.

3. Normalizing Violence and Victimhood

Depicting marital rape in a drama without proper context and consequences can normalize this horrific act, leading to desensitization among viewers. It undermines the severity of the issue and may inadvertently send the message that such behavior is acceptable or inevitable within marriage. By normalizing violence, media risks perpetuating a cycle of abuse and victimhood instead of inspiring positive change.

4. Trauma and Emotional Impact

Survivors of marital rape endure significant physical, emotional, and psychological trauma. By showcasing such scenes on-screen, it can trigger distressing memories and emotions in viewers who have experienced similar traumas. The potential for retraumatization should not be taken lightly, as it can have long-lasting negative effects on individuals already grappling with their past.

5. Promoting Responsible Storytelling

Instead of sensationalizing or exploiting sensitive subjects like marital rape, media should strive to raise awareness, educate, and encourage empathy. Storylines can shed light on the consequences of such violence, highlight the importance of consent and communication within relationships, and provide resources for support and healing. Responsible storytelling has the power to spark conversations, challenge harmful attitudes, and promote positive change.

Conclusion

Media holds a significant role in shaping society’s perceptions and values. It is crucial for content creators, writers, and producers to approach sensitive topics like marital rape with sensitivity, responsibility, and a commitment to ethical storytelling. By doing so, we can contribute to a society that understands the gravity of this issue, supports survivors, and works towards eradicating the evils of violence within marriage. Together, let us advocate for responsible storytelling and use the power of media to foster empathy, understanding, and progress.

This is not all. That one scene has triggered a bigger debate amidst Muslim viewers. What’s Islamic view on marital rape? Stay tune for the same.
