Book Review | The Wedding Charm | Susan Hatler

The Wedding Charm (The Wedding Whisperer Book 1)

In order to retrieve and deliver an antique charm before her best friend’s wedding, maid of honor Sarah must fake being in love with the best man.

Maid of honor Sarah Carlton hasn’t failed at anything since her high school science project was sabotaged by a relentless competitor. So, she’ll do whatever it takes to make her best friend Jill’s wedding absolutely perfect. That includes taking the next flight out of Sacramento to retrieve the panicked bride’s cherished family wedding charm from her late grandmother’s attic in Atlanta Georgia.

Unfortunately, someone else has offered to come to the bride’s rescue—best man Ben Atkins, the same man who destroyed Sarah’s high school science project all those years ago. Now he wants to one-up her by retrieving the charm first? Sarah refuses to let that happen. The race is on.

When Sarah and Ben arrive in Atlanta, instead of finding the wedding charm there’s a letter from the bride’s grandmother directing the bride and groom to complete a series of tasks in order to prove their commitment to each other. With the wedding only two days away, Sarah and Ben must join forces by pretending to be the bride and groom in order to earn the wedding charm. Should be a cinch. After all, how hard can it be to fake true love for forty-eight hours?

Plot Summary & Review

This story is about Ben and Sarah who have known each other since elementary school. Sarah has a crush on Ben since forever, and she also hates him assuming that he ruined her science project because of which she lost a scholarship, and shattered her dreams for studying law.
But that’s the past. At present, Ben is the best man, and Sarah is the maid of honour at Jill and Ryan’s wedding. Jill refuses to get married without her “something old”-a wedding charm from her grandmother. So, the main characters offer to get the wedding charm for them. They pretend to be the bride and the groom, so they could finish the three tasks in order to get the wedding charm.
In that sense, this book has a handful of tropes
  1. “enemies to lover” trope
  2. “fake relationship” trope
  3. “secret crush” trope
  4. and “dog lovers” trope, if I may say so.
As soon as I started the book, I had a nagging feeling that I’ve read this author before. The writing style, the way plot progressed, the tasks Ben and Sarah had to finish to get the wedding charm; it all felt familiar. And now that I’m drafting this review, I realize that I’ve read not one, not two, but three of Susan Hatler books already. I’m such an oldie some times.

Dog lovers will love this book but I ain’t one. The story was alright, I loved Ben, but Sarah, not so much. Apart from a sense that the heroine isn’t lovable, and at times the comedy is forced, this is a very sweet romance, one that takes time to build the chemistry. Also, the charade Ben and Sarah go through to complete the tasks was a bit too long and detailed and boring for my liking. Ben was super nice, and Sarah came off as whiny in some places. The story overall was enjoyable.

Some Lines I liked

Chapter One – Page 8

Memories of all the times he’d tortured me flooded through me, but, of course, my sabotaged science project had been the worst.
Note – Page 8: Okay, I didn’t want to say it so early but she’s whiny, AF.

Chapter Two – Page 17

I’d had toothaches that were sweeter than Ben.

Chapter Four – Page 37

taking a sip of coffee, which tasted as bitter as Ben’s attitude about marriage.

Chapter Seven – Page 78

I’d been independent for so long, I wasn’t used to people doing things for me. Certainly not a guy. The last man I’d dated rarely paid for anything.

Chapter Seven – Page 78

if you look like you belong, then no one will question you.”

Chapter Seven – Page 80

You know how people say reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy? Totally not true.

Chapter Eight – Page 91

“You’re pretty crushable, too. Especially when you’re holding a parasol.”

Chapter Twelve  – Page 140

“Because I’m in love with you,” I whispered, looking up at him. “Not fake love for a wedding charm, either. I’m really, truly, in love with you.”
