Binge Watch 2025 | Will Trent

Reason for Binging

I told you, JioHotstar Subscription, making the most of it, you know.

Reason for Choosing the Show

I read one Will Trent book: Book Review | The Last Widow | Karin Slaughter and was in awe of the character.

About the Show

  • Platform: ABC / Hulu
  • Genre: Crime / Procedural / Thriller
  • Language / Country: English / USA
  • Seasons: 2 (ongoing)

My One-Line Takeaway

Dark, intense, and far more graphic than I expected — strong character arcs, but the tone and physical intimacy felt very different from the book I’d read.

What It’s About

“Will Trent” follows a brilliant but emotionally guarded special agent with a difficult childhood and a unique way of seeing crime scenes. As he works through complex investigations, everyone around him carries their own emotional baggage — making the show as much about people as it is about cases.

👥 Characters

  • Will Trent
Intelligent, observant, emotionally distant in many moments — but on screen he felt more physically expressive than the book version I’d read.
  • Angie
Messy, complicated, deeply wounded — always has something going on beneath the surface.
  • Michael
Flawed but sensitive, often caught between responsibility and feelings.
  • Amanda
Tough, layered, and quietly protective — one of the strongest presences.

I liked that every character had something going on — Angie, Michael, Amanda — no one felt flat.

My Review / Thoughts

Gory, gruesome, and grotesque — this was not what I had in mind after reading one of the books from the Will Trent series: Book Review | The Last Widow | Karin Slaughter.

The show leans heavily into dark, graphic crime visuals, which became uncomfortable at times.

I also didn’t like how physical Will and Angie were on screen. In the book I’d read, Will came across as someone who keeps his distance — but here they were physically close and intimate very often, and it put me off a little.

Honestly, I would have loved to see Angie and Michael together — their chemistry and tension felt more believable.

That said, I appreciated that every character had personal struggles and emotional threads running alongside the cases.

What I Liked

  • Strong character depth across the main cast
  • Emotional backstories woven into investigations
  • Complicated relationship dynamics
  • Amanda’s presence and authority
  • Michael’s softer, human side

What Didn’t Work for Me

  • Far too gory and graphic for my taste
  • Tone felt darker than expected
  • Physical intimacy between Will and Angie felt excessive
  • The adaptation didn’t match the emotional tone of the book I’d read

Viewing Experience

  • Heavy, intense, and emotionally draining at times
  • Not a casual or comfort watch
  • Works only if you’re okay with graphic crime scenes

Favourite Character / Element

Amanda — layered, firm, and quietly vulnerable.

Who Should Watch It

  • Viewers who enjoy:
    • dark crime procedurals
    • character-driven investigations
    • morally grey relationships
  • Not ideal for viewers sensitive to gore or violence

My Rating

3.4 / 5 — strong characters, but too graphic for my taste

Final Thoughts

“Will Trent” builds complex characters and emotional subplots, but the gore and physical intensity made it difficult for me to fully enjoy. Would I watch new seasons if they come out? Probably — but with caution.

If you like this Characters section, I can retro-add it to your earlier reviews (Younger, Not Dead Yet, White Collar) to keep the whole series consistent.
