Hajj & Us

Assalam Alaikum,

Today’s post will be about the final pillar of Islam–Hajj, a Journey of the Heart and Soul

Introduction

I have been meaning to write about this since last year. While I wrote a few posts that came right from my heart, I lost my notes and then stopped ever since.

Last year, in 2022/1443, I had applied for Hajj. There was gross uncertainty as to how many Indians would be allowed to visit Makkha, and whether I would be part of those selected  79000+ people or not. Every time I googled for Hajj quota, there were many articels, and each article began with the introduction to Hajj. What it is and what it means to Muslims around the world.

And Now, I’m writing the same thing, albiet from a very personal and emotional space.

Hajj, the sacred pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, holds a special place in the hearts of millions of Muslims around the world. It is a journey that transcends physical boundaries, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and languages, united in their shared faith. But Hajj is not merely a ritual; it is a deeply emotional and personal experience that leaves an indelible mark on the pilgrims’ hearts and souls. In this blog post, we embark on a heartfelt exploration of Hajj and its profound impact on our lives.

A Calling from Within

For many Muslims, the call to Hajj stirs deep within their souls. It is a spiritual yearning, a longing to stand on the same sacred grounds that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions once stood. It is an opportunity to shed the burdens of the world and seek closeness to Allah, to seek forgiveness and redemption, and to immerse oneself in the transformative power of devotion.

A Gathering of Hearts

As pilgrims arrive in Mecca from all corners of the globe, a sense of unity envelopes the atmosphere. The diversity of languages, skin colors, and cultures fades away, replaced by a shared bond of faith. In the sacred spaces of the Kaaba, pilgrims circumambulate in perfect harmony, moving as one body, whispering prayers that echo through the ages. It is a reminder that we are all part of a larger Ummah, a global community of believers, united by our love for Allah.

The Rituals: A Spiritual Voyage

The rituals of Hajj take us on a spiritual voyage, evoking deep emotions and reflections. As we walk in the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim and his family, we experience the trials they endured, the sacrifices they made, and the unwavering faith that sustained them. From the symbolic act of Tawaf around the Kaaba to the solemn standing on the plains of Arafat, we are humbled by the weight of the journey and the magnitude of the moment.

The Mount of Mercy: A Glimpse of Redemption

Standing on the Mount of Mercy in Arafat (Jabl-e-Rehmat), we find ourselves at the threshold of divine mercy and forgiveness. With tears streaming down our faces, we pour our hearts out in supplication, seeking solace, guidance, and absolution. In that sacred space, we confront our shortcomings, our regrets, and our deepest hopes, surrendering ourselves completely to Allah’s infinite mercy and compassion.

To be honest, women don’t really get to reach Jabl-e-Rehmat. We see this place dring Ziyarat, AFTER the Hajj is concluded. The feeling is surreal, nonetheless. To think that Prophet Mohammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam stood on that very place more than 1400 years ago, it sends a chill down our spine, literally.

The Symbolism of Sacrifice

As the days of Hajj progress, we are reminded of the ultimate act of sacrifice. In the ritual of Qurbani, we witness the echoes of Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to offer his beloved son for the sake of Allah. As the animals are sacrificed, we reflect on the sacrifices we must make in our own lives, letting go of our attachments to worldly desires and dedicating ourselves wholeheartedly to the service of Allah and the betterment of humanity.

A Return Transformed

As the days of Hajj come to an end, we carry with us a profound sense of transformation. We return to our homes, families, and communities with renewed faith, rejuvenated hearts, and a deeper understanding of the true purpose of our existence. Hajj teaches us humility, patience, and the importance of unity. It inspires us to live with compassion, to strive for justice, and to embrace the principles of Islam in our everyday lives.

Conclusion

Hajj is not a mere journey; it is an emotional and personal odyssey that touches the depths of our souls. It is a testament to our unwavering devotion, our commitment to Allah, and our connection to the larger Muslim community. Hajj leaves an imprint on our hearts that lasts a lifetime, transforming us into better versions of ourselves. May we all be blessed with the opportunity to embark on this sacred journey, to experience the spiritual heights and profound connections that Hajj offers, and to emerge as beacons of light, spreading love, peace, and compassion in the world.

May Allah accept the Hajj for those who have performed it until now, and those who are performing it this year, and those who will perform  it till Qayamat comes. May Allah make me in the fortunate bunch that visits Makkah again and again. Ameen.
