Reason for Choosing the Show
YouTube in its infinite wisdom suggested this so often that I had to relent.
About the Show
- Platform: Originally ABC (older sitcom — available via clips / reruns)
- Genre: Sitcom / Workplace Comedy / Absurd Humor
- Language / Country: English / USA
- Seasons: 9
My One-Line Takeaway
Funny in parts and completely absurd in others — sometimes entertaining, sometimes too cringe and ridiculous for my taste.
What It’s About
The show follows Drew, an office employee living in Cleveland, dealing with work drama, friendships, awkward relationships, and random chaotic situations — often exaggerated for humour and absurd comedy.
Characters
- Drew: Ordinary guy, awkward, unlucky — but the humour often revolves too heavily around him.
- Lewis & Oswald: Comic relief — silly, over-the-top, sometimes funny, sometimes just absurd.
- Kate: One of the more grounded characters, but still caught in ridiculous storylines.
- Mimi Bobeck: Drew’s archrival. Sometimes funny, sometimes mean.
- Nigel Wick: Drew’s mean boss.
- Steve Carey: Drew’s brother. Much more interesting than Drew.
Overall, the show felt too centred on one person — someone I wasn’t familiar with to begin with.
My Review / Thoughts
The show was too funny at times — and at other times, the most absurd.
I especially didn’t understand their “find the mistakes”–type episodes. They felt gimmicky and strange rather than clever.
It also felt too centred around Drew as a personality figure — and since I didn’t know him beforehand, the humour didn’t always land for me.
And that Ohio song — honestly, bleh.
I stopped watching after the coma arc — it was too cringey for me. I should have stopped earlier, but I guess I had nothing better to watch. Even Pakistani dramas bore me these days.
What I Liked
- Some genuinely funny situational humour
- A few episodes that worked as light, silly entertainment
- Occasional witty workplace moments
What Didn’t Work for Me
- Absurdity taken too far
- Strange “mistake spotting” style episodes
- Too Drew-centric for someone unfamiliar with him
- Humour sometimes dragged or felt cringe
- The coma storyline was where I tapped out
Viewing Experience
- Works only if you enjoy absurd 90s sitcom humour
- Not a comfort watch for me
- More chaotic than relaxing
Favourite Character / Element
Occasional Lewis humour — sometimes funnier than the main arc.
Who Should Watch It
- Viewers who enjoy:
- loud, absurd sitcom humour
- 90s workplace comedy styles
- Not ideal for viewers who prefer grounded or emotional storytelling
My Rating
⭐ 2.6 / 5 — funny at times, but mostly too absurd for me
Final Thoughts
“The Drew Carey Show” has ridiculous humour that may work for a certain audience — but for me, it crossed into absurd and cringe territory too often. I stopped somewhere around the coma arc, and honestly, I should have stopped sooner.
So long.
