Recap

The telefilm opens with Badruddin bickering (to himself) about his tenants who never pay rent. To teach them a lesson, he turns off the water connection.

Kaneez and Mehru are Badruddin’s tenants. Kaneez sells second and third copies of designer outfits online. Mehru doesn’t necessarily agree with Kaneez’s idealogy about life or Badruddin, but she doesn’t oppose it much. She does cook for Badruddin, though. The mother-daughter duo come across as selfish AF, especially when Mehru suggests to Badruddin:

Mehru to Badruddin: Yeh ghar bech ke do apartment le lijiye. Ek mein aap rehna, ek mein hum.

Aisa kaun kirayadar bolta hai bey?

Anywho, so after a few rant sessions between Kaneez and Badruddin, Badruddin passes away. Kaneez weeps a lot, makes sure everyone knows how upset she it. Of course, it was all a facade. The next day, both Kaneez and Mehru go through Badruddin’s stuff to search for anything of value. And then this happens.

You just know something’s cooking.

They change the room to Kaneez’s studio of sorts.

The doorbell rings and two men have arrived with their luggage.

Kaneez and Mehru are none too thrilled to know that Ashfaq and Kabeer are their to claim their rights on Badruddin’s house.

Both parties try to assert their rights, but they agree to a co-living situation.

At first, both the contenders try to search the others’ belongings for house papers (there are none, both have false claims). The younger couple bickers a lot, and the bickering was mostly fresh and interesting, not annoying as many recent dramas.

They play pranks on each other. Mehru steal Kabeer’s pizza and leaves a plate in the box instead. In return, Kabeer scares her off when there is no power.

I liked how Nameer sat on the chair as we sit by dastarkhwan. So natural.

The scare-off moment has softened Kabeer towards Mehru. So, he asks her to join him at the terrace. The two sit there.

After some awkward moments, Kabeer suddenly says:

“I love you.”

And leaves.

(It was so funny. The timing was perfect.)

And Mehru is confused.

Soon, she confesses, too.

Meanwhile, the older couple is getting along fine. First, Ashfaq offers to deliver some orders for Kaneez and suggest that Kaneez loosen ups a little. Soon, they are dating, without the younger ones knowing. When they announce this, Mehru and Kabeer are upset. Whether Ashfaq and Kaneez really like each other, or getting the house is their ultimate goal, is never cleared.

The nikaah takes place.

Rhat night, as Mehru is sitting alone, Kabeer comes to talk to her. She isn’t too thrilled about this nikaah between Kaneez and Ashfaq and keeps repeating that nothing could happens between her and Kabeer as they are now siblings. Kabeer then reveals that he isn’t related to Ashfaq except that they are both conmen. Ashfaq and Kaneez overhear.

SHOCKING?

Not really!

Now that everything is sorted, a family arrives at the house in a van. The man asks if it’s Badruddin’s house. They all say NO, at once.

I’m Badruddin’s nephew. You guys can leave now.

And the telefilm ends, leaving us with a broad smile.

Review

Predictable, but so much fun.

Sarmad Khoosat is a seasoned director, and it shows. Telefilms generally have no room for fluff, but this was super crisp, not even a wasted moment.

Mehru keeps repeating: ab hum dono bhai bahen ban gaye hain.

First of all, Ashfaq wasn’t Kabeer’s father but even if he was, Mehru could have married Kabeer because they had two different set of parents. And I know it is probably understood but just wanted to clear it if people had doubts.

I mentioned in Qarz-e-Jaan Episode 5 Review that Nameer would be good in comic roles. HE IS. He’s so natural whether it’s Kabeer’s wit or Ammaar’s toxicity, mark of a great actor.

Sohail Sameer and Sania Saeed could do no wrong. Merub was good, too. I haven’t seen her much, but she isn’t like other young heroines jinka munh dekh kar munh nochne ka dil chahe. The best part was of course Badruddin Saheb himself.

Lastly, the only thing that could have been better: I felt that Kabeer and Mehru should have gotten at least a couple more scenes before the confession, but I totally understand that the makers were constrained by the time limit. Perhaps they could have removed some scenes involving Ashfaq and Kaneez?
