Book Review: Cinderella Retellings

Over the weekend, I tried to buddy-read a book.

I enjoyed reading it, and I thought hey, I have never really read a Cinderella’s retelling before, fantasy or otherwise. I didn’t have anything to compare it with.

Then I recalled reading Undercover Princess.

There was one more that I started reading the sample chapters – Cinder by Marissa Meyer.

The last one was Cinderella by Lisa Shea.

So far, I have read a total of four retellings.

  • Gilded Ashes:

It was a Cinderella’s retelling in a fantasy world. The book was Gilded Ashes. It is a Cinderella’s retelling in a fantasy world.

The book was short, and beautifully written. The full review can be found here.

  • Undercover Princess

This one has a modern today’s world setting.

The full review can be found here.

  • Cinderella

Cinderella is a strong and courageous woman. The setting is fantasy, of princes and castles.

The book was short, and quick to read. The full review can be found here.

  • Cinder

This was a recommendation from my GR friend. This one is in a futuristic setting. I have only read the sample and the setting was not to my liking. But I will read it soon. Soon.

Apparently, there are many more. I realize that retellings are a nice way to give your own twist to the classic stories.

Sadly, I cannot come up with any plot to fit in any fairytale. Nor can i fit any of the existing work-in-progress stories as a retelling.

For now, I declare it as ‘not-my-cuppa-tea’.

Happy reading!

  1. I didn’t dislike it. I don’t get things in these fantasy and futuristic settings like you kids do. I’m 1.5 times older than you. ***Weeping***

Aww you didn’t like Cinder! 🙁 But it gets better I promise! Gilded Ashes was darker. I love retellings but I’m disappointed more often than not.
