Review
The first song of the first episode of coke studio seasons 12 is out. It is exactly how a much-awaited season should start.
I am a big fan of Atif since Tere Bin (Bas Aik Pal) and Doori days. I like the unique way he pronounces and un-enunciates words.
I also feel that Tajdar-e-Haram is his best performance so far – controlled, measured, and heartfelt.
This episode is Atif’s rendition of Wohi Khuda Hai, which is originally sung by the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
This performance comes very close to Tajdar-e-Haram. He is poised and sings with such conviction and passion that its genuineness comes across. It is not just a performance. He feels it in his heart.
The durood at the ends the Munajat on a perfect note with a silence in your surrounding and a strange sacred feeling in your heart.
The lyrics leaves an ever lasting impression, I must admit. I wonder if I’d ever be able to master this tune. Singing is one of the many facets of my other self. I talk about it in my short and fun memoir Ctrl Z, if anyone’s interested.
I have not heard the original rendition by Khan Saab so this is my original. My brother didn’t like it as much. He feels Atif’s voice is too throaty and raspy for this supplication.
Overall, a great beginning. What’s your opinion?
