How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days (Chick Flick Club Book 1)

The only thing more hilarious than the movies is… real life?! Fall in love with the sizzling grumpy-sunshine romantic comedy, perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella and Ali Hazelwood!

Stylist Gemma Jones is competing for a once-in-a-lifetime promotion. All she has to do is take some fashion-backward guy from geek to GQ-worthy. The only problem? The man in question is her hairy manwhore of a next-door neighbor.

AKA Bigfoot.

Zach Morrison has zero interest in being Gemma’s makeover mannequin. Sure, it’s fun getting his smart-mouthed neighbor all riled up, but after cashing out of his tech start-up and going through an ugly break-up, he’s taking a permanent vacation. If he wants to wear sweatpants and sleep on a mattress in the corner of an empty apartment— OK. Maybe he needs a little push in the right direction.

But as Gemma races the clock to win her bet, she finds that Bigfoot’s been hiding a few things under his baggy flannel shirts. Like abs of steel, and a surprisingly big…

Heart. He has a big heart.

Soon, sparks are flying between this unlikely couple, but can Zach embrace a fresh start – however manscaped it might be? And will Gemma beat out her Instabitch rival for the top spot – and keep the truth about their bet from Zach?

Find out in the hot and hilarious new romance from “the reigning queen of rom-com”, USA Today bestselling author Lila Monroe.

Non-review Rant

This is the first book I read this month. I can’t boast if I would be able to read more and post the reviews. But let’s hope this is a good start.

Recap

Gemma works as a stylist, a stylist who cares for her clients, wants their comfort over fashion, donates a lot to charities and doesn’t hesitate from trash talk if need be. Zach lives across the hall, reminding us all of Charlier Harper from Two and a Half Men. For a promotion to lead the new “Lifestyle department”, Gemma gets into a bet to do a make-over for Zach without telling him.

Except that these two don’t get along well.

From curbing the urge to talk back to befriending Zach, from convincing him for the makeover to doing-the-dirty, this romance takes its sweet time to demonstrate the make-over and make-out, both.

Favourite Lines

He doesn’t do the little finger quote marks, but I can hear the scorn in his voice.

Chapter 9  – Page 87

My first thought is: I am so going to win this thing. My second is: I am in so much trouble.

Chapter 10 – Page 91

Zach is in a state of bliss, his eyes heavy-lidded, a goofy smile on his face.

Is death by romance a thing? If so, I’m so dead.

From You’ve Got Male:

Then we burst out laughing.

These expressions kinda bother me. The word “laugh” and it’s variations are used 170 time and “smile” 147 times (Gemma, 221; Zach, 514). Too much smiling and laughing.

And there were proofreading errors, I could highlight only one on Page 46
It’s a good point.”

Review

First of all, let me get this out of the way. I loved some of the exaggeration. I do that too, IRL, so it was fun to read. I wish I had highlighted, but I was being too lazy yday.

This book was steamy, but I went in knowing that, so it didn’t come as a surprise. Of late, some book covers look like they are “clean romance” genre, but they have a lot of smut. I have started reading the description carefully before downloading a book.

So, I was saying, that I know smut is coming. I knew what to look for and what to skip (which turned out to be a LARGE portion of the book after 52% mark. I like this story, though. Even if you remove steamy passionate portions, from their hatred to tolerating each other, from becoming friends to something more, the journey was paced perfectly. It never rushed into things, and I love that about romance.

This book also introduces Eva an Zoey, Gemma’s friends and sets up stage for the next book in the series-Zoey’s story. So, that’s also a job well done.

I like most of the things except the smut, and a few expressions that were used too often. But overall, it was a fine book, and I’m already planning to download more of Monroe.

Stay tuned for more book reviews in my “one book review per month” series. This month, I have published two. Isn’t that nice?

Until next time, happy reading!
